Yep, it pretty much is. With so many places in the Big Smoke promising the best Sunday roast in the city, it can be a bit of a minefield choosing where to go. So grab your napkin and follow my guide to the best Sunday roast in London.
Blacklock, Shoreditch
You really can’t go wrong with Blacklock, who serve up arguably the best Sunday roast in London. Head in to the incredible aromas of roast beef cooking, and you can watch meat joints being cooked on open coals. Order a glass of red or a ‘Beefy Mary’ (a Bloody Mary with beef juice and Blacklock spices) while you peruse the menu. Choose from 55 day aged rump beef, Cornish lamb leg, or middlewhite pork loin. The Sunday roast is seriously good. All meats are served with Yorkshire pudding, duck fat roast potatoes, seasonal veg, and rich gravy. Don’t miss out on a side of cauliflower cheese too. There’s a meat free option for veggies, and there are also locations in Soho and City.
The Harwood Arms, Fulham
Set in London’s chic Fulham area, The Harwood Arms is also the city’s only Michelin-starred pub. As you can therefore expect, it serves up one of the best Sunday roasts in London. The food is award-winning with a focus on game and wild food, and there’s a great, relaxed ambience. Visit on a Sunday for some of the best food around. For just under fifty pounds, you can get three courses of delicious food. Choose from options like crispy pig’s head or venison tartare to start. Then, onto the main attraction: feast on bronze turkey with pigs in blanket; braised shoulder of deer in bacon; or roast sirloin of 45 day beef with horseradish cream. All roasts are served with delicious Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, cauliflower cheese, root vegetables, and gravy.
Adam Handling Chelsea
Another spectacular establishment in chic Chelsea, Adam Handling Chelsea is undoubtedly one of the best Sunday roasts in London. It’s also one of the most sophisticated. An elegant restaurant, Adam Handling Chelsea dishes up modern British classics, using seasonal produce that’s sustainable. The real focus here though is the Sunday roast. For £60 per person, you can choose three sumptuous dishes for your Sunday roast. Starters include delicious plates like Wagyu beef and tuna tartare. For the main Sunday roast, you can choose the exquisite Beef Wellington, or perhaps cornfed Chicken Supreme. The side dishes are equally delicious, including crispy roast potatoes or broccoli with pesto. There’s an equally tempting dessert menu, as well as drinks packages with classic or premium options.
The Quality Chop House, Clerkenwell
Hot on the top of many lists of the best Sunday roast in London, you’ll find The Quality Chop House. It’s a real institute for excellent quality meat, and big plates. The Sunday roast is no exception. For £29, you can choose 2 courses, or go all out for £35 for 3 courses. The weird and wonderful starters include dishes like pastrami salmon with horseradish, or beef cheek with olive oil potato puree with apple and watercress. Get ready for the main event – Sunday roasts include a Blue Grey rump with horserash creme fraiche, Cotswold gold chicken with bread sauce, and bone-in ribeye for two. For veggies, there’s the delicious swede and durrus pie served with mustard and cream sauce. Incredible accompaniments include roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, bashed roots, broccoli with parmesan, and Brussel sprouts with chestnut cream. I recommend ordering the Insta-worthy confit potatoes too. Finish off with a hearty sticky toffee pudding with vanilla custard, or try out their unique Capezzana olive oil ice cream.
Coal Rooms, Peckham
For a Sunday roast that will leave you needing to undo a buckle or two on your belt, head to Peckham Rye. Undoubtedly one of the best Sunday roasts in London, the portions are super generous and you’ll be wanting to come back before you’ve even finished your last morsel. Kick things off with a Bloody Mary made from the delicious Bottle Shop horseradish vodka. Sunday roast mains include the delectable rosemary and garlic lamb leg; belted Galloway rump cap of beef; miso butter half chicken; and seasonal vegetable gratin. All dishes come with some incredible sides, including orange and honey roasted heritage carrots, roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, buttered greens, and gravy. Don’t worry – you’ll certainly get enough roasties here! Save enough room for dessert. The sticky toffee pud with clotted cream is literally to die for.
The Pig and Butcher, Islington
A bit of an Islington institution, settle in for a delicious meal at this north London gem. Serving up one of the best Sunday roasts in London, it’s a relaxed pub with a great atmosphere and strong cooking. All its produce is fresh and raised on sustainable British farms. One thing I like best is that the Sunday roast menu is determined by what meat they have available. Options include pork shoulder with Bramley apple sauce; roasted Elwy Valley lamb leg; and roasted dry aged grass-fed Hereford beef sirloin. To share, you might also be tempted by the chicken crown with lemon and thyme butter. All of the Sunday roasts are served, of course, with Yorkshire pudding, beef dripping roast potatoes, carrots, greens, and creamed leeks.
Simpson’s in the Strand, Central London
Simpson’s in the Strand is perhaps one of the most luxurious spots in London to find a Sunday roast. It’s rooted in British history, with a traditional bar and dining room that serves up delicious British classics. One of the best Sunday roasts in London, each is crafted by top notch chefs and using fresh British ingredients. Simpson’s in the Strand dates back to 1828, and you’ll find subtle references to its history throughout the restaurant. It’s also thought to be a favourite of the creator of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Something Simpson’s is most famous for is its epic carving trolleys – it was originally to avoid disturbing chess players. Nowadays, the tradition has continued for some of the best Sunday roasts in London. Opt for the classic 30 day dry aged roast rib of Scottish beef from the carving trolley. It comes with Yorkshire pudding, buttered Savoy cabbage, dripping roast potatoes, gravy, and horseradish sauce. So delish!
The Game Bird, St James’s
The philosophy at The Game Bird is to offer casual dining in sophisticated surroundings. There’s a focus on modern British comfort food made with seasonal ingredients, all presented beautifully. It’s also located within the beautiful The Stafford hotel, making for a chic atmosphere. Offering one of the best Sunday roasts in London, you can choose from 2 courses for £40, or 3 courses for £45. Starters include pumpkin veloute, smoked salmon, and salt-baked heritage beetroot. The delicious mains include the classic roast British grass-fed beef which is carved at the table, along with Yorkshire pudding, roast potatoes, and seasonal vegetables. The desserts are equally as delicious – the classic Lyle’s golden syrup sponge pudding is delectable, as is the dark chocolate orange rice cremeux. Whatever you choose, you’ll love it!
