Looe, Cornwall

This weekend, my family and I set off for a mini holiday down to beautiful Cornwall, UK. It was partly to enjoy some quality time together before my brother heads back to university, and also before I hop over the Atlantic to try a new life in Vancouver. After spending four hours driving south west to the county, we reached our first stop: Looe, Cornwall.

Arriving in Looe, Cornwall

Looe is an adorable seaside resort in north Cornwall. We visited at a perfect time, because in September most of the summer crowds have left. This left us with a relatively quiet little town to explore and enjoy.

Despite being a seaside town, Looe still retains its status as a functioning fishing port. This means excellent fish, and there are some delightful restaurants to match. Of course, this means you can’t visit without stopping off for some incredible fish and chips.

One of the best things about Looe is that once you’ve finished gorging on its incredible food, there are plenty of walks you can take. It’s such a pretty seaside town, so you can walk for a while along the beach or take the South West Coast Path that runs through Looe.

East Looe Beach

We meandered along the pretty beaches, gazing hopefully at the beautiful houses perched along the coast. Looe is perfect with families because the sandy beach is fun for rock pooling, fishing, and crabbing to keep kids entertained. We took a coastal path, enjoying the views along the way.

Looe’s primary beach is beautiful and was fairly quiet during our visit. We climbed up the beach steps to get a better view. There’s plenty of coastal walk for stretching your legs, with amazing scenery and beautiful houses.

Of course, we had to stop to take a break for ice cream in one of Looe’s traditional shops.

Once we’d stretched our legs around Looe and filled our bellies – mainly with pasties – we hopped back into the car for our next stop, Cornish Orchards.

Cornish Orchards, Duloe

 Located in Duloe, Cornwall, you’ll find Cornish Orchards. It’s around a fifteen minute drive from Looe, so it makes the perfect pitstop. Cornish Orchards is a producer of premium Cornish ciders and apple juice, all crafted from its onsite orchards. In fact, in its position on Westnorth Manor Farm, all of their cider is pressed, blended, and bottled on the premises. We wanted to get a taste.

Their friendly staff set up a cider tasting station for us. She talked us through the production process, and the various tastes behind each cider and juice. It was really interesting and even tastier.

Exploring Cornish Orchards

If cider isn’t really your thing – not a problem. Try their apple juice instead. My mum and I were searching for the perfect apple juice, and we found it. Meanwhile, the boys were after Cornish Orchards’ bountiful range of ciders.

The apple juice has a lovely sharp yet sweet taste, and all juice is bottled within 24 hours of being pressed. Cornish Orchards blend their juice with fresh Cornish water from their very own spring to give it a taste quite like no other. I’m a big fan and to this day it’s one of my favourite juices ever.

The boys picked some of the store’s Cornish Gold Cider, which is refreshing with a light, champagne sparkle. I’d argue it pretty much complements anything. It’s not just apple juice and cider that Cornish Orchards sells. Think honey, preserves, glasses, ginger beer, and gift packs. All of their items are presented beautifully with lovely branding.

Truth be told, the hardest part of your visit will be picking which items to buy. We ended up with quite a selection. Having left Cornish Orchards with a hefty box, we drove further down the coast to where we’d be staying in Carbis Bay, just up the road from Cornwall’s famous seaside town of St. Ives.
